How is the information collected? 

Most business information comes from the likes of Companies House, Credit Reference Agencies and business directories. However, sometimes it is gathered from publicly available information. If the latter, make sure all steps have been taken to ensure compliance, as being publicly available doesn’t necessarily mean it’s ok for marketing purposes.

…and how are your lists verified? 

Business information is often collected and verified using telephone calls and emails. If anything is different, you should definitely do more due diligence.

 

Things to consider when buying B2B sales records:

 

What size is your entire business database? – This ensures you are getting a true representation of the total number of records available.

How frequently is your information updated? – should be updated on an ongoing basis, with updates being applied anywhere from daily to monthly. Avoid databases that have not been updated for over 12 months.

Are phone numbers screened against TPS / CTPS files? – If phone numbers are being supplied, check that this process is carried out. That way, you know you can call them without getting into trouble.

What are Database Licences?

Many B2B lists are supplied on a 12-month contract, which means you can work the data for a year. During that period, a prospect becomes yours to own if any of these apply:

  • You’re asked for a quote, or you close a sale
  • They request you contact them again in the future
  • They confirm you can keep their details

How to deal with alternative contacts

If a prospect gives you an alternative contact’s details, then that alternative contact is not a party to the data license. However, the original prospect remains subject to the license. After 12 months, the data must be re-licensed or deleted. As such, we always recommend that you keep the prospect list separate from your own database until any of the above instances occur, at which time you can move them into  your database. Alternatively, apply a “flag” to the database prior to importing it into your database, so you can easily identify the source of your records. This will allow you to quickly locate and delete the records once the license expires.
